You must be using a continuous contract with some data from
the early 1980's.  You must eliminate the negative values from
your test either by shortening the period you are testing, or by
switching to a continuous contract that stitches the contracts
differently.  Pinnacle Data offers ratio-adjusted continuous
contracts, in addition to reverse-adjusted contracts, to deal
with this problem.
