Well it is kind of like when you let Windows look for a driver.  Well except I've never seen windows find one.  It is only automatic after you tell the program to run.  Then it finds them and runs the instillation programs the manufacturers built.  So all we trust is it finds what it is supposed to.

Likewise with patches - I use www.softwarepatch.com for all my needs - they
explain what a given patch is intended to do and then I can elect to use it
or not. They cover most OS's and applications. I do not trust any automatic
updating.
