RAID 1 protects from hardware failure of the disk.  It doesn't do 
a bit of good to protect you from virus infections, data 
corruption, fumble-fingered data destruction, etc.  Backups let 
you go back to before the Bad Thing happened to your data.  RAID 
doesn't.
