Sounds like you checked this already, but an update might have reset
IE to default browser, so in Firefox go to Tools | Options... select
the General icon and make sure there is a check in the Default Browser
section's checkbox. Click the Check Now button to confirm.

If that's not the problem, go to Control Panel | Folder Options | File
Types and look for "(NONE) URL: HyperText Transfer Protocol". Click
the "Advanced" button at the bottom. Click the "Open" command and
click "Edit." Delete anything in the DDE Message box (it should have
%1 or something like it). Click OK until you are out.

Subject: OT: Linking to Browser

Apologies in advance for the OT post but I'm out of ideas here.

I run Win XP with the FireFox browser (and have done for some time),
however something has changed over the past day or two:

Now when I click on a URL link in a message or a document Internet
Explorer loads up, even though FireFox is set as my default browser.

Can anyone suggest how I can rectify this state of affairs please?

TIA!
