Sorry Doug, but as a long-time software engineer I have to respectfully
disagree.  What you're referring to is sometimes called the "alpha
test".  The beta test is SUPPOSED to be a test of what is proposed as a
production version.  It may well be that some developers have
bastardized the term and release "beta" versions which they know are FAR
from production-ready.  (The term, if I recall correctly, originated in
the hardware-engineering domain long before software was a significant
consumer-market item, and you didn't go to the expense of producing
actual hardware until you were pretty damn sure the gadget was very
close to being production-ready.)
