They guarantee nothing.  Why is everyone so concerned about shared bandwidth
(Don't you realize that you share bandwidth with all the other users of your
ISP when you use a modem).  Data traffic is generally very bursty.  Cable
modems are the fastest way to access the internet today that an individual
can afford. They are much faster the ADSL.  If you have the ability to get
one in your AREA then you would be foolish not to consider it.  I routinely
see speeds of almost 3 Megabits per second transferring files from work with
two DS-3's to cable modem subscribers.
