Thanks Rakesh,
This is what I'd normally do. except that
my MS db comes with unfriendly obtuse idiotic and frustrating 8 digit numeric tickers - so classification of data into groups, sectors, indiex constituents and other watchlists becomes impossible. The "organise assignments" option only reads tickers and not full names. So it cant be used to organise DB post creation.

the only option is to create the data segregations WHILE creating the database. So I set up a database using the MS plugin. Before adding ms directories, i create watchlists and groups and use MS IMPORTER to sort the symbols.
After this, I add the MS directories (MASTER file). So now the database should update directly with having to IMPORT data over and over, each day.
Problem is, because of this circuitous method, the properties of all symbols is set to - Use local databse=YES - instead of the default NO.
If i can get the AFL that will change this property to NO, across all symbols in database, the MS plugin will ensure seamless updation, into a database that is now classified satisfactorily.

will appreciate any help. Best wishes for the year ahead.
regards,
eswar

Hello

You do not need to use the MS data importer if you have configured your DB for use with the MS plug-in that is provided with AB.

Simply choose the MS data plug-in as your data source when setting up the AB database and then add the MS data directories and you are good to go.

Hi, I created an AB database from a Metastock database using the Metastock Importer. When using the MS Importer, i import data into groups and watchlists that I create (different from the folders in the original MS database). I then change the AB database settings to use the MS Plugin. Now I find that daily updates to the MS database are not reflected in the AB database.

Any idea what I am doing wrong? Thanks in advance

I'm trying to get that classification from the vendor. In the meanwhile can I know if it is possible to create a AB database from a MS database, first using the Metastock importer, and then maintain it daily using the MS plugin?

If you can put up a spreadsheet/csv with stock, market, sector, group data, you can easily import this information with file import (and a specific file format), and voila! all your stocks will be properly organized.

NB: I suppose you should be able to write in AFL a simple script to export this info as defined in the MS db to a csv.

Hi everybody,

Old issue - new angle.

Is it possible to first "create" a AB database from a MS database using the "Metastock Importer", and having created it to satisfaction, change the database settings to use the MS plugin to update it seamlesly?

The reason I ask is The MS database is configured into folders (each with a Master/ Emaster file) that classify different market segments, indices etc, separately. This is a good structure to have. And when this database is read on Equis Metastock, I can actually browse the folder and get into that market segement I want.

But when I use MS plugin to CREATE a AB database, all the tickers get clubbed under one market/ group. The seperation offered in the original MS database is lost. I then have to use the "organise Assignments" tool to separate this into groups and watchlists.

And when the original MS database comes with non standard 8-digit numbers as ticker symbols, using the "organise assignment" tool is impossible, because this tool only reads tickers and not full names.

"...so you see I have come to doubt, all that I once held as true......." Paul Simon

thanks in advance for any help to get me out of this vicious cycle.

Thankyou to all that suggested remedies.

In the end I deleted the database in the AB directory C:\Program
Files\AmiBroker\MSData, then recreated the database (same name and
destination) with MS plugin and all is working as it should (or as I
expect it to).

I am not sure as to that being the correct and how that affects AB
in how it stores its information, but I could not find any tool or
procedure to remove the database.

It seems that data MS Import & MS plugin - may have been the issue.

Cheers
Still learning
Ed
