All the ease-of-use features makes securing Windows 2000 difficult. However, the Center for Internet Security (CIS)
recently published tools and guidelines for improving Win2K. By their own admission, CIS's benchmark only gets you 80% of the way toward a really secure Windows environment, a vast improvement over the default level of 45%. This article introduces CIS's Win2K security tool (FREE), and reveals our hands-on tips on how to work with it.

CIS Benchmark has three important elements:

1. A lengthy downloadable guide that explains what to do to secure Win2K, why you do it, and what each setting might break if
   tightened to maximum security

2. An .inf file that provides a template to help you quickly set up security policies both locally and for a group

3. A scoring tool that scans your system, then produces a "report card" so you can see what to do to improve security. The scoring tool utilizes Microsoft's HFNetCheck.
