Jeff,
A couple of years ago I had the same problem and among other things I wrote
a tick file defrag program since normal disk defragmenters do not alter the
record fragmentation within the tick file. This program which I call
"Unfrag" and the associated Read-me file are available from the following
link:
http://home.adelphia.net/~rlscott1/pub/Trade%20Station%204.0/Unfrag/
This might not cure all the problems but it should help if you are running a
large tick file.
