Just some guesses...went through similar a while back:

1) Corrupted files and/or OS

and/or

2) HD is on it's way out.

New drives are cheap these days:

If your data ain't backed up, and/or you don't have
a back-up drive, you should get a back-up: particularly
since your drive might be about to die. It looks like you'll
need one soon anyway.
