OFF TOPIC: best image files format

Hello omega-list,

  I just hooked up a new scanner for win2k.  I see that it does not
  create .gif files as I normally do.  There are bunch of others.

  Which one(s) are best for sharing with various lists, emailing to
  collegues etc.  .pdf is listed but I don't have Acrobat Writer.
