Visual basic is a separate program. It does not come with Excel. VBA comes
with Excel.
I do not know if Excel 97 will run with VB 6, my guess is that it will.
However Excel 2000 is better than Excel 97, and Excel 2002 has a few more
improvements. If you are going to upgrade, you should think about getting
the full Microsoft Office 2002 package. The academic price for MS Office
is about $200.00. I'm not familiar with Corel Office, but it probably had
all or most of Microsoft Office's capabilities.
