Thanks Ture

Incredibly precise information , exactly what I needed. But i need to do an
example to get my head around it.

I am not using global server at the moment cause I am just backtesting stuff
till I get something incedibly excellent. My data is in metastock folders.
So I am going to set the big point value to USD dollars converted rate ..for
example.

All of my strategies are written to buy and sell only 1 contract. On the
furures currency markets this 1 contract equates to $100 000 . So to compare
the results of a Futures market to a FX spot market i need to trade the same
amount ie 100000$ of the spot currency. So then i have to convert that to
the same base currency which i am choosing USD$.

Here is my first attempt
Question 1.
AUDUSD [Aust/US] currently .7144 usd$ , so i set bigpointvalue= 71440 so I
buy what i call 1 contract [ie . 100000$ of oz$ ] ... therfore a 1 cent move
in OZ$ /or/ 1 percent move on the chart = $714.4 USD [remember i am trading
100000$ of Aust$ ] do this sound right?

So if that is correct then here i will try EURJPY
Question 2.

EURJPY [Euro/JPY] currently 135.158 yen which in USD$ = 1.23936 , so i set
bigpointvalue =  123936  so i buy 1 contract [ie 100000 eur's ] .....
therefore a 1 percent move on the chart = $1239.36 USD
Do that sound right?

Any suggestions? maybe i can use the average price of the last year in the
USD dollar conversions?

Cheers
Cameron

It is tricky getting cash FX data into TS. Since cash FX isn't and exchange
traded contract,
you need to create a reference contract for it. Below is how to do it...

Go To Global Server..
Tools
Edit Symbol Dictionary
Data Source: Non-global Server Data Types
Category: Forex

Add Symbol
Add Symbol in: Forex

Symbol: Call it whatever you want, ex. EurUsd for the Eur, or UsdJpy for
dollar Yen. I simply use Spot4 and Spot2, the numbers specifying how many
decimal points to go out. Eur is 4 pips and Jpy is 2 pips.

Description: spot
Exchange: Forex

Highlight the button for: Use the following seetings as default.
Price Scale 1/100 for jpy and jpy crosses and 1/10000 for all other fx
pairs.
daily limit 1. min movement either .0001 or .01, depending on fx pair. Big
point value: 1
collect daily quotes and 1 and 1.
session1 is 12:00am to 4:59pm.
sessions2 is 5:00pm tp 11:59pm.
Highlight sunday through friday.

close window and save symbol.

When you go to add workspace, when the dialogue box asks you for symbol,
type in the symbol u created.

make sure you adjust the seesions begin and end time.
This will show trade results in points. For ex, if you buy Eur at 1.2600
and sell at 1.2700, the trade PL will show .0100.
If you want to see dollars, make big point value 100,000. However, for this
will NOT be accurate in backtesting. For example,
if you buy $Chf at 1.2600 and sell at 1.2700, you make .0100 pips. This
will be in CHF pips--not US dollars. You have to adjust the big point value
to reflect a dollar swf rate. This still will not be accurate. The only
100% accurate way to get a US dollar PL is to export the individual trades
to excel and use the historical rates to calculate the PL.

Contact me with any further questions.
