Actually, Microsoft is not allowed to distribute Java. About 7-8 years ago,
Sun filed a lawsuit against Microsoft because Microsoft was using it's
"embrace and extend" strategy against Java and was creating
incompatibilities. Sun won the lawsuit and asked that Microsoft be
disallowed from distributing JVM's and Microsoft signed an agreement that
they would distribute a JVM for 5 years and then cease. I said at the time
that Sun did exactly the opposite of what they should have done. Sun should
have required Microsoft to distribute a 100% compatible JVM or distribute
Sun's JVM. That 5 year period was up 1-2 years ago. Sun thought they would
be hurting Microsoft somehow if they got them out of the Java business.
Just one more way in which Microsoft has benefitted from stupid competitors.

Kind of like exchanges that want to charge an arm and a leg for their
data...

Eric,

I'm a frequent visitor to Steve Gibson's site. I used his patch
rather than Microsoft's SP1. A few k verses 145 meg and possible
disablement of my computer seemed like a good trade. I guess you are
aware that Microsoft has also fixed XP Pro so you can't use Java
unless you download it from Sun directly. Nice guys.

Come on Linux.
