Average daily ranges are only part of the story.
The number of times the market traverses that range intraday (or a good part
of it at least) makes a huge difference.

The trader who enters at the open and exits at the close might only see a 20
point range even if the market traverses that range four times.
Another trader sees 80 points.

Whether the market appears flat to you or not will very much depend on your
trading style.
