Depends how you design your system - I use Excel together with a 
Futuresource feed and it works just fine because the Futuresource server is 
doing most of the hard work, Excel only handles the visualization.  Excel 
doing all the work including database handling would be very ugly indeed.

Maintenance can be a problem, but it's overcomable with good coding.  The 
issue is that most traders (understandably) have neither the time nor the 
inclination to become deeply involved in programming.  On the other hand, 
if you do put the work in you get totally customized, slick visualizations.

Personally I can't see the Freemarkets project getting very far.  It 
doesn't have a profit motive, yet that is the be-all and end-all of its 
target users.
