I would recommend CHKDSK over ScanDisk.  I worked in a department with about
60 PCs once and the person in charge of PC troubleshooting trashed atleast 3
hard drives with ScanDisk.  She wouldn't use it anymore after that.  I don't
know how much ScanDisk does beyond CHKDSK, if anything.  Maybe it just has a
nicer interface.

If the defrag does something like a Scandisk file fix, then it could
indeed be helping, but not by a defrag.

Perhaps it might be an interesting experiment to schedule Scandisk
instead of defrag and see if it still works well...
