Point & Figure .. coming up.

I'll give the helpful and supportive Tom DeMark first crack at solving this
one..!!

But seriously, the only reference I have ever seen to answer your question
was in an old book by James Dines (out of print) "How the Average Investor
Can Use Technical Analysis for Stock Profits" ... in which he quotes another
old book by Harvey A. Krow "Stock Market Behavior" in which Harvey says...

"The origins of point and figure method are lost in obscurity, but there is
no doubt that it is the oldest of the charting techniques. Legend has it
that the practice began about 1880, some fifteen years before the advent of
bar charting, and its inventors are supposed to be variously a dentist from
Kentucky and a New York stock market buff named Joseph Klein."

"Whatever the origin, the method became well known by the turn of the
twentieth century. Charles Dow and William Hamilton both mentioned it at
various times in their editorials."

I have mentioned this fact once to Tom Dorsey since he seems to believe that
Dow was the inventor but I think that Tom is wrong on this.

Subject: History of Point & Figure??

:Hi all - I'm new to the world of news groups, so if I breach etiquette,
:please flame me gently... I am doing a PhD in Finance and trading rules
:looking at Point & Figure charting. I'm trying to track down the
:earliest reference to the method. I have a copy of de Villiers (1934 I
:think) and Tom Dorsey says he came across some reference to Charles Dow
:metnioning P&F in the late 1800's. Can anyone help with establishing
:when P&F started. In an ideal world you would be able to supply the
:author, title and year (ahhh - the perfect world)
:
:Thanks...
