Many thanks for all the replies regarding my message about my drive
thrashing.

After looking at all of the advice (and backing up again to an external), I
am (tentatively) concluding that the thrashing was due to RAM full and
swapping pages (or whatever is swapped) to disk. At the time, besides lots
of tabs open in FF3, as well as a real time 1 minute datafeed, as well as
several instances of AB open (but nothing RT), I remember I was also viewing
a real time movie. Too much data even for my 3M RAM chips. The monitoring
service I run did not show RAM depleted (or else I do not know how to read
the tray icons**), but I think it probably was and was frantically swapping
out to disk.

Even with that, I need to get and install a new drive, but am reluctant to
take on the C drive image swap that goes along with it.

Many thanks again for all the advice.

** I just added a commercial program which was given away free at Giveaway
of the Day called AnVir. Hover over one of the tray icons and it reports
RAM usage and which programs are using what amount. Right now it is
reporting total use 38%, ThinkorSwim=202MB, Firefox=150Mb; Outlook=93Mb,
Used 1175Mb out of 3071Mb. Handy application. I thought it was ok the
other day when the thrashing was occurring but I am not totally sure. Will
look harder the next time it happens.

Defragging is not wearing out your drive. The opposite is true.
