RE: [amibroker] Selecting a ticker from AFL

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the little tip.  It was Geo who was hoping to accomplish this.  I will probably try it as well as it does sound like a useful tool or way to do this.

Happy Holidays,

Dave

Dave,

You can do what you suggest with a series of simple indicators.

On the first one you select the price chart you want – for example with the DJIA all in one price chart.

Then you add a line at the top:

Setforeign(“^DJI”,”X”);

Then save the AFL to a DJI afl file.

Do the same thing with the indicators you want……….. just add the set foreign line on the top. And save the individual AFL files.

Then take the set of DJI indicators and load them on the tab you want.  Edit each one of the AFL files with the next  ticker you want and save them with a ticker specific name, and load them on a new tab.  Keep going with as many as you want.

When you get done, save the data base so it will load the format  of the tabs next time it is opened.

Hope this helps,

Mike

Thanks for being patient with me.

Although I fail to see how putting these three (or more) symbols in a watchlist wouldn’t help.

If you used WL #60 for example, you could then put the ^DJI on sheet one of that chart with the 3 panes you mention.  You would then do the same for each of the other symbols you are interested in.

The difference is that you want to switch from one sheet to another inside on one chart instead of switching from one chart to another.

Is that correct?

Dave

Hey with a large enough monitor you could have all three of your charts open and not have to switch at all.  <grin>

lol ...  No problem. What I want is a specific symbol preselected per chart page. The rest of the charts on this page are all derived AddToComposite data and forced to display only those with Foreign AFL function. So by design, they show the same thing no matter what ticker is chosen for the main price display. All I want is when I select the tab, the main price chart is for the predetermined symbol which matches the indicators on the page. e.g. I have a layout for McClellan indicators. Let us say I have 3 chart pages each with 3 panes. Tab 1 is DJI. Pane 1 is DJI prices. Pane 2: DJ McClellan Breadth Oscillator. Pane 3: is DJ Breadth Summation Index. Tab 2 is RUT and so on. This way, all I need is to select the tab to review DJI and RUT without also having to select the ticker and never have mismatched charts. Watchlist or favorite list will not do the job.

Geo,

I am a newbie with the software so go easy on me as I am trying to understand what you are looking to accomplish.

Are you trying to provide a quick and easy way to access certain symbols?   Have you thought of using a watch list or the favorites?

Or are you trying to show the price of a stock as compared to the ^DJI?

I had tried this. However I needed to create a layout for each ticker. More cumbersome than just selecting the ticker for the correct combination. If it can be done via AFL or script, then I can have 10 or more tabs each fixed to one ticker. And save this as one special layout for this application.

Save “^DJI” chart window as a layout. Each time you load this layout it will use ”^DJI” as the default ticker and any studies previously charted and saved to the Sheet/Layout.

Is there a way to automatically select a ticker from AFL? I would like to fix the price chart display in a given pane to say ^DJI. I can force the display by using SetForeign. However, AB still uses the currently active ticker to store studies I create in the indicators in that chart page. So this does not work for me. I need an equivalent to selecting a ticker from the Symbols list.
