Hi Tomasz,

You got it, but no self-respecting Japanese would write it that way
(purely phonetic). We would use a Chinese character that means
"understand", and write it this way: (see snap1.png) (shita simply
puts it in past tense). Unfortunately (and especially unfortunately
for anyone trying to learn Japanese), the first character is *not*
phonetic at all. For example, the same character also means
'minute', and can be pronounced 'phun' or 'poon'. It also means
'part' (a minute, for example, is part of an hour).

We have, easily, the most complex writing system ever developed on
earth. Some of our Chinese characters have as many as 15 or more
pronunciations, depending on what other characters they might be
combined with. None of it is phonetic. This is the result of
importing Chinese characters over many, many centuries. Sometimes
the Chinese changed the pronunciation during the interval, and
sometimes we mangled it ourselves, or miscopied it.

Here is one example:

Snap 2 is pronounced "tanjoubi" and means "birthday".

'tan-jou-bi' (for the three characters)

Notice the middle character ... 'jou'.

Now look at snap 3.

The *same* Chinese character is now pronounced 'nama' (fresh, or
unprocessed) since it stands alone.

In case you ever want to come to Japan to put on a seminar, a very
important noun is shown in snap 4: nama biru (draft beer). You will
see this sign just walking down the street in Tokyo -- almost
everywhere.

I can exchange Japanese lessons for programming lessons, no problem.

^_^
