For some real speed get:

Ultra-160 SCSI ($160 for adaptec card)
scsi 10,000 rpm disk, 5 or so msec. access ($300)

I just put it in a 2.2 Ghz Pentium 4 with 512 MB RDRam at 800 Mhz.

Indeed a "no compromise" system, although it won't take more than a few
month before something faster is available.
Robert

ps. As a rule I upgrade every time I can (sort of) double the speed of my
system.
