that there was a study that indicated they were either faster or more
efficient, but I'm not particularly sure the exact details of the

You only need a router if you plan to share the connection with other
computers.  Even then, you can use the computer that is connected to
your adsl line as a router if you know how to configure it.  But for
ease, get a router if you plan to use multiple computers on your adsl
line.
