OT: Win 2K tuning/performance improvements possible?

i hope that there's somebody here who can help me improving the performance
of Win 2K?

i had planned to migrate all my machines to Win 2K because of the reduced
problems with low memory resources, etc. and i have lots of difficult with
TS 2K blowing up every day or so.  having been around this game a few times,
however, i decided to put Win 2K on a non-main line machine -- a fast HP
notebook of recent vintage that i use only for traveling.

what i discovered is that Win 2K as i have it currently configured is an
absolute dog.  it takes FOREVER to boot and launching applications makes me
feel like i'm back in the late 80s.

question: are there som obvious steps i could take to improve the
performance of Win 2K?
