Given that it was a FREE trial copy, I'm not overly concerned about
what it cost me or gained him. :-)

I would advocate for costly trial copy for such systems:
The vendor has to pay you $99.95 to spend one hour with his BS software.
(Price deducted from sale if any or of lawyer appointment for the case).
