Running MS in a RAM disk is very risky, and very tricky. It's really easy to lose data in a RAM disk, so unless someone has a lot of experience with managing RAM disks, I wouldn't do it. MS is very complex to run in a RAM Disk.
The easiest way to realize MS speed improvements is to use fast hard drives, like a WD Raptor, or even better solid state drives like the one's by Intel, OCZ, Samsung and Toshiba. There are a lot of them. And the price is falling constantly as more come to market. They install just like a regular hard drive so they're easy to work with. They are as fast as RAM Disks but have non-volatile memory.
If you want to experiment with Ram disks, you'll need a very good Ram disk manager. The Ram Disk manager will help you set up the Ram disk, add a hard device to windows and manage what goes into when you boot and what needs to be saved before shutting down. Most of the loading and unloading is done through batch files,
which the Ram Disk software should prepare for you.
Ram Disk software varies in quality and ability. In addition, you have to have a lot of spare RAM to handle programs like MS. If anything shuts down your computer, causes a reboot, a freeze or any other hiccup, good bye data.
As I said if you want to experience the fastest running speed possible for MS, buy an SSD drive. Educate yourself first because not all SSD's are created equal and not all SSD's will produce a real speed advantage for MS. There are single cell and multi-cell drives and they each perform differently, and their price reflects it.
I've used RAM disks occasionally, but for everyday programs like MS, my experience is they are not practical for most MS users. SSD's are.
Some programs, like FireFox, are fairly easy to run in a RAM disk. I would start with those and work up to complex programs like MS, if you have the RAM. If Firefox is dumped out of the
RAM disk for any reason, no big deal.
I have 8 megs of RAM and five fairly fast hard drives in this computer. The next one is only going to have 6 megs of faster RAM, but 4 hard drives, and 2 SSD drives, with none in raid.
