 Hi Patrick/All,

On the subject of multiple monitors, I finally got
around to installing MaxiVista software the other day. ( First mentioned here by
Dingo about a year ago. Thanks D!! ). If you have a setup like mine (
I have 2 PC's and 1 laptop networked together - none are equipped for multiple
monitors ) this program will allow you to to use your other computer's monitors,
through your network connection, just as if your main PC had multiple
monitors. It also works on PC's that already have multiple monitors - you can
never have too many I guess, right? No hardware required, and easy
to install it on any new computers you get in the future - just buy it
once. Also, just click to change modes and control your other PC's
from the keyboard of your main PC. Very clever, and it really works
great! If anyone is intersted, you can find it at www.maxivista.com .

And as long as I am raving about
software...

I subscribe to a couple of free computer security
newsletters. It seems the hot topic these days is "Rootkits". A month ago, I had
never heard of them, but now I have learned quite a bit. Here is what I learned
from my reading:

A rootkit is code that hackers can use to make
their viruses, trojans, spyware, etc. completely invisible to standard
antivirus/antispyware apps. It works by intercepting calls to the OS
from the anti-virus/spyware software, and then returning untrue
results ( ie - "no trojans here!", when there really is ). The
code is freely available on hacker websites.
They have apparently been around for a while, but have recently seen a big
increase in their use. MS is working to counter this - they have a "Ghostbuster"
product in development. Right now, the best tool to check for the presence
of a rootkit on your PC is the free "Rootkit Revealer" from SysInternals
( the same people who make DebugView ). From what I have read, the
experts seem to agree that this will find any rootkit *currently* out
there. But apparently, both the good guys and the bad guys know what needs
to be done to circumvent this, it's just that it is *very* hard to do, and no
one has figured out how to do it - yet...  When they do, the cat/mouse game
between virus/antivirus writers will move to the next level. I have downloaded
Rootkit Revealer and from now on, I plan to run it alongside my
anti-virus/spyware software. Just thought I would
mention this because it seems to be a rapidly growing threat that most people
are unaware of. You can read more by googling for "rootkits", or
listen to a radio interview with Steve Gibson ( Shields Up! )
here:

Like I said, I just learned about this recently so
I am certainly no expert - if any of the computer gurus here would like
to add anything, please do. Thank you!

  Profile URL

  Hi Ara,

Another workaround that has been available for a long time is to create a
custom tool to link a browser window.  The new twist is that you
can now put the tool on the toolbar by:  Tools ->
Customize -> Tools tab, then New, name the tools and enter the path to
the location on your hard drive or the URL in the Command: and Initial
directory.  Thereafter you can create a custom Toolbar and put the Tools
(presently named as User defined tool 1 through 10, the name you gave the tool
will appear once you close the customizing box) on it or on an existing
toolbar.  You can create your own Icon for each as well.
Then with a click you can open a browser window and you're off and
running.  I have tools set up to the equis site for "TA from A to Z",
Purebytes archives, the AFL Tutorial and several other reference works on
my hard drives, and several scripts that I run.  This upgrade has been
  tremendous.

By the way -- has anyone else discovered the joy of being able to "float"
the different workspace tabs outside the confines of AB display?  With my
multiple monitors, I can spread AB across 2 displays (with multiple
windows) and then float the RT Quote display, Profile, Notepad, etc., to
a third monitor.  Perhaps this has been noted already, there have been so
many posts on the new UI.  Really neat work and still more to
  discover.
