Bob: Thanks for both replies, and the link to the paper. That paper goes all over the place with regard to effects on competition and legal ramifcations in Europe. Not quite what I need, but the references bear following up.

Thanks to everyone else too. My financial advisor advised me "that initial analysis you did with the subscription fees is enough! Stick that in your business plan and get back to doing real work!"

Lynn asked:
Can you say what type of stuff the start-up you are working on,
may be looking at or doing?

We have some proprietary algorithms and methods that are broadly applicable to any stochastic time series, not just price series. Possible applications might include weather forecasting, certain medical monitoring devices, and longitudinal data collected by marketing research firms. And of course trading - which is our initial focus only because the data is so much easier to obtain - I have discovered that it's unbelievably hard for a private start-up to get medical data for research purposes.

We're still exploring what sort of products we want to develop. We don't even know if it's worthwhile to develop anything for other traders. That's why I'm trying to research the size of the market segment consisting of just Tradestation users. I was surprised that this publicly-traded company didn't disclose the number of deployed platforms in their annual report.
