Monthly data before the late 1960s isn't worth much as the price was
controlled by governments. As more governments dropped the gold
standard, the spot price started to swing more, with the US dropping it
in 1971 and really opening the floodgates for trading.

Here's a link (thank you google) with annual HLC in USD from 1800. I
assume they are European spot prices as the "official" USD price was $35
plus delivery charges for many years prior to 1971 and Americans
couldn't even legally own gold during that period.
