print data in scientific format

with TS8 there does not seem to be possibility to
output numbers into a file in scientific format:

1.618798E+00 vs 1.618797642

if the number is very small, there come rounding off
errors with the existing formats. I suppose one has to
write a code to output the data in format that he
wants. 

It would be useful if output format could be easily
specified as most programming languages allow.
