Maybe you need to examine the behavior of EL a little more.

See the attached in which I printed out the first 40 (and show the
first 25) bars of execution of your code.

This should tell you why I asked the question.

MD was set to ZERO by initialization and cannot change
with your logic.  You would need to set it to some value
other than zero to accomplish what you say EL will do.
