don't know about ts2k (who cares about that :-) but it's not true in ts4
with the patch. the original question was about dates in ascii files.
ts4 b23/4 REQUIRES 8 digit dates in ascii files.

20001220 (ascii) = 1001220 (power editor)

valid formats (ascii)
20001220
12/20/00
12/20/2000

valid format (power editor)
1001220
