History of Point & Figure??

Hi all - I'm new to the world of news groups, so if I breach etiquette, 
please flame me gently... I am doing a PhD in Finance and trading rules 
looking at Point & Figure charting. I'm trying to track down the 
earliest reference to the method. I have a copy of de Villiers (1934 I 
think) and Tom Dorsey says he came across some reference to Charles Dow 
metnioning P&F in the late 1800's. Can anyone help with establishing 
when P&F started. In an ideal world you would be able to supply the 
author, title and year (ahhh - the perfect world)
