That's right. THEY also said that breaking the sound barrier was impossible.

One fact that I find incredible about the four minute mile is that in the year
following it's achievement, 50+ other athletes were miraculously able to
surpass the barrier too. Just goes to show that we can't possibly know HOW
much the the mind plays a role in our limitations - but it's impact is
enormous.

BTW It was (Sir) Roger Bannister who was the first to break the four minute
barrier not Jesse Owens ( He ran the sprints 100/200 meters and Long Jump)
