My view is that the system tester is valuable.  I use it a lot.  One just
needs to be careful of how it works, its limitations,  and be sure you
understand what it is telling you.  All backtesters have limitations.  Like
anything else, what you get out depends on the quality of what you put in.
And don't forget that systems never work as well in real world trading as
they do in testing.

So, its not useless.   Most of  the complaints you see here are really more
disapointment at what it could be, not how lousy it is.
