Here's the low-down of why you get low resource
errors in Win98 with Metastock:

One area where Windows NT/2000/XP is far better
than Windows 95/98/ME is an area of memory called the GDI or the Graphical
Device Interface.

Have you ever had Windows come up with "Out of
resources" or "the system is running low on resources" errors, only to find you
have very few programs running, plenty of RAM and disk space free?  It's
most frustrating and led you to reboot because the whole system was
unstable.

Well this is nothing to do with your actual RAM in
most cases - it's to do with the GDI running out of space.  Under
Win95/98/ME this area is limited (by design) to 64KB (that's 0.064MB).  The
GDI is used to store all aspects of items that are put on the screen (windows,
fonts, pull-down boxes, panels, buttons etc etc.).  When we use graphically
intensive programs, such as charting packages, especially at higher resolutions,
then this area of memory is often exhausted and you get one of those dreaded
errors above.

For a trader this message spells doom because it's
often when you're right in the middle of a complex analysis, the market has been
running for a few hours etc etc.

Well Windows NT/2000/XP was engineered to support a
similar GDI area - but each program gets its own 64KB GDI area rather than the
entire computer having one shared area.  This is a KEY REASON for traders
to consider upgrading from 95/98/ME to NT/2000/XP.  The other is general
stability through programs being isolated from each other (ie one program
crashing doesn't affect anything else on the PC).

Before I made the move originally, I was trying to
drive two monitors each at 1280x1024 with various charting apps (Metastock,
Bourse, E*TRADE Pro, etc.) and the switch to Windows 2000 gave me immense
stability.  I've since upgraded to Windows XP and I can happily leave my
system going for a week or two at a time without rebooting.
If your laptop is using an ATI Rage Pro chipset and
you need drivers for Windows XP, check out:

Note:  You need Windows XP to support the ATI
Rage multimonitor mode (Windows 2000 won't do it)
