Neo, why donīt you start with
http://www.hedgeworld.com/
http://www.aima.org/
http://www.hedgeindex.com/

HFs are funds that go long and short assests such as bonds, equities,
currencies, etc. They try to diferentiate from mutual funds (long only) as
being able to have a low correlation of results against them.

HFs have various strategies and assest classes yet the main idea is to
diversify from long only strategies in equities and bonds. Being less or not
regulated at all they can manage actively various types of assets, taking
advantage of a very much less perfect market(eg. emerging market debt).

Thay have been growing rapidly in $ under administration lately as many
investors got burnt in the tech bubble. Institutional investors as large as
CALPERS (California Public Employees Ret Service) are starting to pour part
of their investments on this group. Small investors are geeting on the wagon
as well through funds that invest in Hedge Funds.

Hope this clarifies a bit the landscape.

Sincerely

Nicolas
