David:
In matters like this, we need to be very paranoid. In one form or another,
police and intelligence services of all countries, have been routinely
spying on ordinary people for a long time.

The French have been spying on people since at least the time of Napoleon
(Foucher ran the secret service for him), so this is nothing new for them.
I'd almost suggest that you use some kind of scrambler on your cell phone,
but then this would attract attention to yourself. Perhaps you could create
a simple telephone code. A few years back I read that American reporters,
when in Syria or Lebanon, referred to another country as Dixie. The local
official eavesdroppers never learned the location of Dixie. Now if you and
your associates spoke some obscure Amerind or Eskimo language you'd have a
ready made code. American slang or a street language like Double Dutch might
work. Pig Latin is too simple, easily learned, and doesn't work too well
with polysyllabic words.
