Try this:

save the chart you want as the default template (right click on the chart,
select...).
then go to "file", "new", "chart", (make sure the chart you want to
duplicate is the "live" one.  this will open a duplicate of the chart you
want.  now go to "file", "save as", in the "save as type" box scoll to
"smart chart", give it a name and that should do the trick.
