Hello Gary,
I don't use layouts etc so I don't know much about it but since
everyone else is bs=usy:
1) In Tools >> Prefs >> Misc I have AutoSave
Preferences/Templates/Layouts checked - next time I open AB the view is
exactly where I left it last (that suits me as I am project orientated
and when I come back I want to continue the project).
2) To start looking for how to spec a layout:
In my AB directory I have a default.awl in the (Global) Layouts folder -
I don't have any files at all in my (local) database layouts folders
(because I have never saved a layout?)
In the Workspace >> Layouts panel right click and the context menu
offers the option to save/save as/save as default etc.
I guess that you can save the current layout as the global or local
default if you want to.
