I've got to offer my opinion on this one, because what's being stated
above is so much bigger than the single question of Ctrl-H.

The purpose of the computer is to relieve the human of unnecessary
repetitive action that wastes the seconds/minutes/hours of his or her
life.

If you are not the one saddled with the burden (because the defaults
already suit you) then of course it does not matter to you.

If you are the one saddled with the burden, because of defaults that
cannot be changed, then it generally matters to you very much.

If you don't like the defaults, but don't care that your time is being
leaked away (like air from the space station), then you are either a
blessed soul, or a fool (take your pick!).

TJ, you've often offered us numerical analyses of great precision and
insight wrt. memory, performance, etc., so why are you stooping to
hyperbole here?

No one is talking about one-hundred-thousand checkboxes. That's
bogus, and you know it.

Suppose instead, realistically, that we might talking about dozens, or
at most a couple of hundred (to put what I consider a really high-end
lid on it) ultimately identifiable configuration toggles that people
might want to set differently.

You would receive nothing but praise (IMO) if AB were to be
customizable to this degree. Every user would be able to configure it
as desired, with a total savings over time that might even be measured
in man-years as the user base grows and time goes by. (hour = 3600s,
day = 216000s, etc.)

Do I have trouble finding a topic in the Encyclopedia?

Seriously, this a non-issue, so long as just a modicum of thought is
applied to organizing whatever needs to be organized.

I love AB, and I have <almost> nothing but praise for it's author -
but I think you were really out-to-lunch, Thomasz, when you wrote the
above, and I hope you will rethink your position.

Finally, all "big-picture" consideration aside, I happen to agree that
the user should definitely be able to make a "sticky" choice of the
cross-hair behavior they want, and have that choice applied to all
windows until changed.

Cheers!
